In Catan (formerly The Settlers of Catan), players build settlements, cities and roads on a hex island, racing to 10 victory points. Resources are the fuel — and resources come out of two dice rolled at the start of every turn. Understanding those dice is the difference between a starved position and an engine that hums.
The dice and how production works
At the start of their turn, the active player rolls two six-sided dice and calls the total. Every hex is marked with a number token; each hex whose number matches the roll produces one resource for every settlement (or two for every city) touching its corners. A single roll can pay several players at once, so you collect even when it is not your turn.
The exception is 7. No hex is numbered 7. Instead, rolling a 7 activates the robber: every player holding more than seven cards must discard half, and the roller moves the robber onto a hex to block its production and steal a card from an adjacent opponent.
The number tokens and their real odds
Because a total comes from two dice, the middle numbers are far more common than the extremes. The tokens even show this with pips (dots) — more pips means a likelier number. Here is the full 2d6 frequency table Catan is built on.

6 and 8 are the golden numbers — each hits nearly one roll in seven. 2 and 12 are traps, paying out barely once every couple of turns. You can watch this distribution build up by rolling two dice repeatedly and tallying the totals.
Winning strategy
- Prioritise high-pip numbers. When placing your first two settlements, count the total pips of the three surrounding hexes. A settlement on 6, 8 and 5 produces vastly more than one on 3, 11 and 12, whatever the resources.
- Balance resource diversity. An engine needs all five resources over the game. Aim to touch brick and wood early (roads and settlements) and pivot to ore and grain for cities and development cards. Do not tunnel on one resource, however good its numbers.
- Value ports. A 2:1 port turns a resource you flood in into anything you lack. Grab a port only once your production can actually feed it.
- Play the robber tactically. Park it on the strongest 6 or 8 of the current leader, and steal from the player closest to winning — not just whoever is nearest.
Common mistakes
- Chasing a rare resource on a bad number. Ore on a 2 looks tempting when you need ore, but it will barely produce. A worse resource on a 6 usually wins.
- Hoarding past seven cards. Sitting on eight or more cards means a 7 could cost you four of them. Spend down, or expect the robber to punish you.
- Ignoring 6/8 clustering. If your two best numbers are the same total (say two 8s), a single robber or a cold streak on that number chokes your whole economy. Spread across different high numbers.
- Treating the dice as “due”. A number that has not come up for ten rolls is no more likely next turn. Placement, not superstition, is what fixes bad luck.
