Long before the cube, chance had a shape: the ankle bone. The oldest randomising tools we know of are not really dice at all, but the story leads more or less straight from them to the seven-piece polyhedral set that sits in a modern gamer’s dice bag. Here is the broad arc, kept to what the evidence supports.
Astragali and knucklebones
The earliest ancestors of dice were astragali — the small ankle bones (talus bones) of sheep and goats. Roughly four-sided in the way they naturally come to rest, they were tossed and read by which face landed up, each face traditionally given a different value. Knucklebones of this kind turn up across the ancient world and were used for games, gambling and divination alike. Because a bone is irregular, its faces were not equally likely, which gave early games a lopsided, unpredictable character that true cubic dice would later smooth out. The bones also survived as a children’s game of skill — “knucklebones” or jacks — well into modern times.
Ancient cubes: Egypt, the Near East and Rome
Cubical dice with pips, close in form to the ones we use today, are genuinely ancient. Six-sided dice have been recovered from sites across the ancient Near East, Egypt and the classical Mediterranean, made from bone, ivory, stone, clay and other materials. By the time of the Roman Empire dice were thoroughly ordinary objects, used for gaming and gambling across society despite periodic attempts to regulate betting. Roman dice were not always perfectly balanced — surviving examples are often visibly asymmetric — but the essential idea of a six-faced cube marked one to six was firmly established and has scarcely changed since.
The twenty-sided die in antiquity
The d20 feels like a modern invention, but many-sided dice existed in the ancient world too. Museums hold icosahedral (twenty-faced) dice from antiquity, including examples associated with Ptolemaic-era Egypt and the Roman period, cut from stone or glass and marked with symbols or letters rather than the numbers we use. What they were for is not always certain — games, gambling or some form of divination are all plausible, and the exact use often isn’t recorded. What is clear is that the geometry of the regular polyhedra, described by Greek mathematicians, was known long before anyone thought to build a role-playing game around it.
From gaming pieces to a mathematical family
The five Platonic solids — tetrahedron, cube, octahedron, dodecahedron and icosahedron — are the shapes whose faces are all identical regular polygons, which is exactly what makes them fair dice: every face is equivalent, so every outcome is equally likely. These are the shapes behind the modern d4, d6, d8, d12 and d20. The familiar d10, by contrast, is not a Platonic solid but a later design (a pentagonal trapezohedron) engineered to give ten equal faces — a practical addition rather than an ancient one.

Dungeons & Dragons and the polyhedral set
For most of history, “dice” meant six-sided cubes. The full polyhedral set became a mainstream object only in the 1970s, when Dungeons & Dragons arrived and asked players to roll a range of different-sided dice for different tasks. Early hobbyists sometimes sourced polyhedral dice from educational suppliers before gaming companies produced their own, and the plastic sets could be rough enough that players inked the numbers themselves. As the hobby grew, the seven-dice set — d4, d6, d8, d10, percentile d10, d12 and d20 — settled into the standard it remains today, and the d20 in particular became the emblem of tabletop role-playing.
The digital chapter
The newest turn in the story swaps physics for mathematics.
